JEPPESEN (J-AID)

from privote pilot manual
The Jeppesen Airport and Information directory (J-AID) is a collection of the most current aeronautical and airport information available. It includes data for both VFR and IFR flight operations. The J-AID is divided into several section: Introduction, Radio Facilities, Airport Directory, Meteorology, Tables and Codes, Air Traffic Control, and Regulaitons. The information is ususally updated on a regualr schedule. Included in the J-AID is the material covered int he Airman's Inforamtion Manual and the Airport/Facility Directory, with extensive coverage of many other aeronautical knowledge areas. Because of the volume of material in the J-AID and frequency of revision, FAR Part 135.81 autherizes the use of the J-AID as a substitute for the AIM and the Airport/facility Directory for air taxi and commercial operations, Many airloines and air taxi operations prefer its use.

Jeppesen-Sanderson Flight Computer

Jeppesen-Sanderson Flight Computer (front) Jeppesen-Sanderson Flight Computer (reverse)

Probably the only slide rule still in widespread production. This is a somewhat specialized rule (though it can do basic multiplication and division using the circular rule on the front) designed for solving the vector problem involved in calculating a flightpath, correcting for wind. The front of the rule can also calculate things like fuel consumption, while the back window is designed to allow the user to draw the vector problem in pencil. Pretty darn cool, and they're nicely made (this one's all aluminum). I guess I'm not too surprised these things are still made; i'd be a little reluctant to depend on a cheap Duracell for something like this. Plus, the design is really well-suited for the task (among other things, it's designed to be usable with just one hand, the other hand being somewhat occupied in the actual piloting of the airplane.)
